November 23 – Hans Carl Christian Koop

George Gershwin’s musical “Funny Face” premieres on November 23, 1927 in New York.

And on November 23, 1963 the longest running show on global televison “Dr. Who” starts with the first episode “An Unearthly Child“.

And on my family tree we meet Hans Carl Christian KOOP who died on this day in 1879 in Upahl, grandduchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany – being 81 years of age. That is quit a biblical age for that time!

His son Joachim KOOP registered his father’s death one day later with the officials.

According to the age given on the death certificate he was born 1798 or 1799 in Rüting, Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany.

What else can we take as information from his death certificate?

He was married. The name of his wife is given with Sophia née SUHRBIER. From a birth certificate I found for one of their children, I know her full name is Maria Elisabeth Elsabe Sophia SUHRBIER.

I found a census record for 1867 where he is given as a small farmer. 1875 when his son married he already handed is farm over to the next generation, living as a retiree with the family.

  1. I so admire the calligraphy of the time. Our documents, while possibly more legible, don’t have nearly the artistic flare. Thanks, too, for mention of the Dr. Who anniversary. I’ll have to share that with my daughter, who is a major “Whoie”.
